What Are Working Groups?

Companies, organizations, and individuals looking to drive innovation and efficiencies within industry are increasingly looking to external sources to advance new ideas. Commonly referred to as "open innovation," this paradigm encourages collaboration across organizational boundaries.

Working Groups allow organizations to combine the best practices of open source development with a set of services required for open innovation, enabling organizations to foster industry collaborations with vendor-neutral governance.

The collaboration promotes and augments TCTF technologies to meet the needs of specific industries and communities, including through the development and implementation of joint marketing programs to increase awareness, adoption, and contributions.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about Working Groups

What are Cometbid Foundation Working Groups?

Working Groups are formal industry collaborations that enable organizations to combine open source development best practices with services required for open innovation. They provide vendor-neutral governance for members to collaborate on solving industry problems and driving shared innovation through related open source projects.

Who can participate in Working Groups?

Participation in Working Groups is only open to Cometbid Foundation members. Organizations must join the Foundation and then execute the required participation agreements for specific Working Groups they wish to join.

What services does TCTF provide to Working Groups?

The Foundation provides vendor-neutral governance, ecosystem development and marketing services, collaborative management, specification development, branding and compatibility programs, intellectual property management and licensing, shared IT infrastructure, and development processes.

How are decisions made in Working Groups?

Working Groups operate under formal governance with committees and structured decision-making processes. All entities participate based on their contributions and merit, ensuring no single organization has special status or veto power.

What is the relationship between Working Groups and Projects?

There is a tight coupling between Working Groups and open source projects hosted at the Cometbid Foundation. Working Groups help coordinate efforts of otherwise separate projects by providing shared vision, roadmaps, and determining how to leverage resources to best serve the open source community.

How do Working Groups differ from Interest Groups?

Working Groups require collective investment through participation fees and have formal governance with participation agreements, charters, committees, and budgets. Interest Groups are lightweight, self-governed associations without fees or formal agreements, ideal for exploring topics before committing to formal collaboration.
